Gujarati Script is similar to Devangari script (which is used to write Sanskrit, Hindi, Marathi). Pronunciation of alphabets is same in Gujarati and Devanagari.
Many characters also have same symbols as shown in highlighted rows in below chart

Main difference is that in Gujarati Script we do not give line above letters unlike Devanagari.
Few alphabets have different symbols

Through out this blog, I will try to give transliteration of Gujarati words and sentences in Roman script. So that even if you have not understood Gujarati script, you can still understand pronunciation.
So below table also shows the Roman alphabets that I will be using for each Gujarati letter.

Consonants in Gujarati script :-

Note for transliteration  :-
In Roman transliteration, small and capital letters indicate different alphabet.
e.g. small "n" is ન where as capital "N" indicates :-

So read transliteration conventions correctly.

Non-traditional vowels
Traditionally Gujarati vowels are only 12 as mentioned above. But like Marathi, the Gujarati language has also adopted two more vowels to similar to those in English words "cat" and "cot"

  2. Hi! Your blog has been really helpful. I'm half Gujarati but wasn't taught to speak it growing up so I'm trying to learn now. I'm wondering, what do you mean by small and capitol letters indicate different alphabets? Thanks

    1. Hi Yasmin,
Throughout this blog I have given Gujarati sentences in Roman script .... as there are more alphabets in Gujarati than Roman script; I had to reuse some of the alphabets. So small and capital letters are used to indicate different letters in Gujarati.

I would like more of your feedback. Can you please mail me at learnMarathifast@gmail.com.
      Waiting for mail.
      Thanks,
      Kaushik

    2. By alphabets do you mean letters/ characters? Are the pronunciations different for the letters that only differ by capitol or lowercase in Roman characters? Or are there two alphabets that are used in differing situations?
      Thanks

    3. By alphabets I mean basic characters in Gujarati.
Please read this lesson and next lesson "Gujarati Barakhadi/Barakshari" again in detail. Also watch the videos in those lessons. It will clear your doubts.
If it doesn't please ask again.

  3. Hi Kaushik I have a few suggestions for you. Please add play button besides every alphabet as it would be convenient to play it again and again if one finds some particular one difficult to understand

  7. Thank you so much for this blog! It is almost impossible to find decent Gujarati learning material. It is very hard to find it with romanized words. Your blog is full of useful learning material, and provides both romanization and audio. Also, you have the best alphabet chart and pronunciations I've found. Most audios are not clear enough for me to understand the sounds correctly. Please don't stop adding to this wonderful blog. You are my only hope for learning this language so that I can communicate with my in-laws.
